10 Designs that Inspired Us from Design Miami/Basel 2013


This year Design Miami/ Basel celebrated its eight edition with an impressive roster of 40 international participants in the gallery programme and seven emerging galleries as part of the Design On/Site programme in a brand new venue designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron on Basel’s Messeplatz. We take you through some of the highlights from this year’s Design Miami/ Basel.

At the core of the Design Miami/ forum is a marketplace for collectible design, amid which the most reputable international design galleries present curated exhibitions of museum-quality furniture, lighting and objets d’art, attracting the highest level of private and public collectors of historical and contemporary design. The exhibiting galleries at this year’s Design Miami/ Basel dealt mainly in exceptional design objects from the advent of Modernism (circa 1900) to the present day, with some galleries specialising in outstanding 18th and 19th century antiques.

Mathias is a Danish-born, London-based furniture designer who produces sculptural furniture which is visually pleasing and technically innovative. His works are closer to fine art than to traditional industrial design. Working with diverse industrial materials and processes, Bengtsson pushes forward the sculptural, technical, and philosophical possibilities of three-dimensional design

The Growth Chair was presented at the Galerie Maria Wettergren, which specialises in contemporary Scandinavian design and art. The Parisian gallery represents unique and limited edition works by Mathias Bengtsson amongst other designers and artists.


Nucleo is a design studio based in Torino, Italy. Nucleo is a collective of artists directed by Piergiorgio Robino, active in contemporary art, design and architectural fields.

The Wood Fossil Table is made from wood, epoxy resin. The table is a unique piece, exclusive to Gabrielle Ammann Gallery. The pieces in the fossil Wood Fossil introduce a new era of unique projects inspired by the destruction of matter as a result of time passing by.
