Tour the Beautiful National 9/11 Memorial in NYC

After nearly a decade of planning, arguments, and heated discussions, the National 9/11 Memorial opened to the public in New York City in 2011. In memory of September 11th, we’re taking you on a virtual tour through this moving memorial in lower Manhattan. Designed by architect Michael Arad, the memorial is a sensitive, respectful complex in the heart of the new World Trade Center site. Two vast reflecting pools, located in the exact footprints of the Twin Towers, are the focus of the site. Standing at the edge of the large voids, with the waterfalls drowning out the sounds from the surrounding construction sites, one easily remembers the magnitude of the loss we experienced that day. Visitor passes to the memorial are booked through the end of October, but through our exclusive photo gallery, you can view the memorial and see its graceful elegance.

The World Trade Center may still largely be a construction site, but on the tenth anniversary of the September 11th attacks, the site where the Twin Towers used to stand became New York City’s newest landmark with the official opening of the National 9/11 Memorial. Designed by architect Michael Arad, the memorial transforms the space from an empty void into an elegant and dignified place of repose. Two reflecting pools, vast expanses in the footprints of the towers, dominate the site, and their cascading waters drown out the surrounding sounds, creating an ideal place to pause and reflect. Opening to the public today, the 9/11 Memorial is a respectful, emotional complex still very much in-progress. Take a look through our photo gallery to see the memorial for yourself.

Michael Arad’s 9/11 Memorial relies on the calming element of water through the design, filling the open footprints where the World Trade Center buildings used to stand with reflecting pools surrounded by cascading waterfalls.

The new 1 World Trade Center building (formerly known as the ‘freedom tower’) rises above the memorial, reflecting the memorial and in-progress buildings in its glassy exterior.
