Acrophobia, whose etymology derives from the Greek word for “peak, summit, or edge,” is an extreme or irrational fear of heights. Acrophobia sufferers can experience a panic attack in a high place and become too agitated to get themselves down safely. Photo: Carron Brown/Flickr – The newly opened The Shard is Western Europe’s tallest building at 1,016ft and the sensory experience known as The View from The Shard is located on levels 68, 69 and 72. The 360-degree view of London from 800ft up is nothing short of magical. Familiar landmarks like Tower of London and St Paul’s Cathedral seem to lie practically at your feet while the Oval Cricket Ground can be discerned at a distance.

At a height of over 2,000ft with majestic views over the fjords, Aurland Lookout was designed by Todd Saunders and Tommie Wilhelmsen. A massive wooden bridge, it curves seamlessly downward to perpendicularly meet the mountainside. At first glance, the structure is terrifying as there seems to be nothing to stop you from falling over the edge.
